Our year begins at iceout in the Spring, usually about the last week of April. We start our season fishing for Spring Salmon and Trout on Lake Huron.
The last two years we have been fishing off of Kincardine to take advantage of the great Spring fishing for Spring Chinook and Trout. The Spring fishing is excellent! The fish are extremely feisty at this time of year and will often fight you to a standstill on our light tackle. (Just hang on and keep a tight line. ("Keep that rod tip up !!!!" ). Chinook Salmon of 20+ lbs. are not uncommon and Trout up to 16 lbs. are also around at this time of year. This Spring fishery usually lasts well into June, and depending on the year can run into July. As the fishery goes, so goes the Blue Goose. When the fishing slows at Kincardine we will move the boat to ERIEAU Ont. in the central basin of Lake Erie for the Summer. (see below). Our big fish for 2002 was a 27 lb. Chinook. A week before the Derby, drat!
SUMMER FISHING (Lake Erie)
During the Summer months we fish for Walleye and Steelhead on Lake Erie. Our home port is Erieau Ont. This port is in the central basin of the lake and located directly south of Chatham Ont. It is about 10 min. off the 401 hwy. It is about a 1 hr drive from Windsor (Detroit). and about the same from Sarnia (Port Huron). and about 1 hr. from London. Historically this part of Lake Erie has produced large quantities of Walleye and Trout for over 10yrs. Limit catches are not unusual and the size of the fish is incredible, everyday we land several fish in the 9 to 13 lb. range and the average weight of the fish is well over 6 lbs. Our Summer Walleye are on a decline but our Steelhead are way up limits are not unusual (5 fish each).
The big open waters of the central basin produce what is truly a WORLD CLASS FISHERY for LARGE WALLEYE. As a bonus there are some great STEELHEAD! in the Lake as well, which seem to appear with out warning to kick start your hearts!!! Don't forget your coolers for the fish, you WILL need a BIG one on this trip!!! 2001 saw some limits catches of Steelhead!!
